One of the most commanding figures in American history, Theodore Roosevelt presents a unique challenge to the portrait painter. While not physically handsome, Roosevelt projected a dynamic energy. In my painting, I?ve posed the President in the Red Room of the White House, thinking that the intense color would add to the emotional effect of the portrait. I deliberately have shown the President in a pose similar to that used by John Singer Sargent in his masterful 1903 painting of Theodore Roosevelt, now hanging in the East Room of the White House.
