1996, hearing a rumor that our first big studio (at 130 West
57th Street) was available, and acting strictly on impulse,
we sublet Studio 1010 and returned to the vast duplex apartment
in which Elizabeth and I had begun our lives together, 23 years
earlier. It was quite an apartment: fourteen rooms, four bedrooms,
five baths, two maid's apartments, and a huge main studio room
with a thirty-foot ceiling and a working fireplace. We had a
grand time in this remarkable and historic space for three years.

Possibly the very finest artist's
studio in New York (if not America),
this great room featured a thirty-foot ceiling and excellent north
light.
