Getting Started in New York

was 35 years old and had just arrived from Minnesota. It was exciting to be in New York, but just a little bit scary. I rented a small apartment in the famous Renaissance Studios building at 130 West 57th Street. On the top floor of the building lived the popular society portrait painter Charles Baskerville, who invited me to paint his portrait. I squandered my savings on one hour with the top supermodel Sunny Griffin, and painted her portrait. My cat, Pinkie, had made the trip from Minnesota, and was as nervous as I was. J.H.S.
